Reading set to have key men fit for Wolves clash

Reading defender Tiago Ilori has returned to training after recovering from a head wound and could feature in their clash against leaders Wolves.

Goalkeeper Vito Mannone has been carrying a hip problem but is expected to be fit, as is forward Sone Aluko who picked up a knock against Derby before the international break.

Midfielder Liam Kelly (hamstring) could be involved, along with striker Sam Smith (knee), and Joey van den Berg should be available after being sidelined by a suspected concussion. Striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson is closing in on a return from his calf injury.

Winger Callum Harriott (hamstring), midfielders George Evans (thigh) and Garath McCleary (groin) all continue their rehabilitation. Defender Jordan Obita is out for the season after major surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament.

Barry Douglas is suspended for Wolves as they head to the Royals.

The wideman is out after collecting his fifth booking of the season in the 2-0 win over Fulham earlier this month.

Midfielder Ruben Neves is one yellow card away from a suspension of his own after collecting four cautions so far but Wolves have no fresh injury worries.

Romain Saiss and Alfred N’Diaye will return after helping Morocco and Senegal respectively qualify for the World Cup in Russia next summer.

Celtic boss Rodgers plots swoop for 4m Reading defender

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is planning a January transfer raid on Championship side Reading, according to reports in Scotland

Rodgers has admitted central defence is an area he wants to strength when the transfer window opens again in the new year and the Bhoys boss has sent his scouts to make regular checks on Royals defender Liam Moore.

The Premier League title winner has enjoyed a new lease of life since joining the Royals from Leicester last summer and has been in fine form for Jaap Stam’s side, despite their inconsistent form in the Championship.

The Daily Record claims Moore is at the top of Rodgers’ transfer wish-list and a £4million bid could be in the offing for the 24-year-old.

Leeds among duo keen on January move for Man Utd striker

Championship rivals Leeds United and Reading are set to battle for Manchester United striker James Wilson, according to a report.

The 21-year-old is nearing a return to full fitness following a knee ligament injury he suffered while on loan at Derby last season.

The Sun states that a number of clubs from both the Premier League and the Championship were interested in taking Wilson, but United rejected approaches as they felt it best he continue his recovery with them.

The former England U21 international has a contract at Old Trafford until 2019, with the Red Devils having an option on an extra year.

Now, it has emerged that both Leeds and Reading would be interested in a possible loan deal this January.

Speaking to MUTV, Wilson admitted he would be open to a loan switch: “I don’t see why not. Obviously, the summer transfer window has gone and there was a lot of interest.

“But the staff all came to an agreement that I would stay until January to build on what I’ve already worked for.

“So I think it’s certainly a possibility. We’ll just have to talk and have a few conversations with the manager and certain people around here.

“I’m not ruling it out but we’ll come to an agreement over what needs to be done.”

Wales star compares Ben Woodburn to global superstar

Wales teenager Ben Woodburn has been backed to “thrive” and fill the huge void left by Gareth Bale’s World Cup absence.

Real Madrid star Bale will miss the final two games against Georgia and the Republic of Ireland after being ruled out with a calf strain.

But David Edwards believes Liverpool youngster Woodburn – who scored the winner on his Wales debut against Austria last month less than five minutes after coming on as a substitute – could prove a trump card again this week.

“I’ve seen a lot of Ben in this campaign and he reminds me of what Gareth was like when he was younger,” Reading midfielder Edwards said.

“And if you see what Gareth was like in the Euros, the bigger the stage, the more he thrives.

“There aren’t many players who can do that when the whole world is watching.

“But from what I’ve seen I’m pretty sure Ben is cut from the same cloth and he will relish the chance to show everyone he is the real deal.”

Wales are currently second in Group D, four points behind leaders Serbia and one above the Republic.

Chris Coleman’s side must win their final two games to guarantee themselves at least a play-off spot next month.

Edwards accepts Wales will miss Bale in Tbilisi on Friday and then at home to the Republic three days later.

But he insists the depth of Welsh football compared to when he made his debut a decade ago means that Wales are better equipped to cover Bale’s absence.

“Gareth told me the news and your heart sinks a little bit when you first hear it,” Edwards said.

“But we did it in the summer when we had to go to Serbia, we put on a performance and drew 1-1 without Gareth (who was suspended).

“It’s not like when I first played for Wales, because the gaffer has options and players who can come in, do a job and help to get those three points.

“It’s a million miles apart, it really is, from when I was first in the squad.

“When I started you could not replace a Craig Bellamy or a Simon Davies, it was too hard to fill their boots.

“But now I look around at the quality and the number of Premier League players.

“And it’s not just Premier League players, but top Premier League players.

“They proved in the Euros (when Wales reached the semi-finals) they can do it on the big stage because this is the best shape Welsh football has ever been in.”

Wales’ squad was disrupted further on Wednesday morning when Norwich forward Marley Watkins was forced out by injury.

Barnsley’s Ryan Hedges has been called into the senior squad for the first time after representing Wales at Under-19 and Under-21 level.
