Wales call up Barnsley star as Norwich forward withdraws

Norwich striker Marley Watkins has been forced out of Wales’ World Cup qualifying squad due to injury.

Watkins, 26, will miss Wales’ last two Group D qualifiers, in Georgia and at home against the Republic of Ireland, and has been replaced by his former Barnsley team-mate Ryan Hedges.

“Marley Watkins has withdrawn from the Wales squad through injury and has been replaced by Barnsley striker Ryan Hedges,” the Wales Football Association confirmed.

“It represents a first senior call-up for Hedges, who has previously represented Wales at Under-19 and Under-21 level.”

Watkins, sent off after stepping off the bench in Norwich’s 2-1 win at Reading on Saturday, joined the club on a free transfer in June after rejecting a new deal at Barnsley.

“Gutted to have to pull out of the Wales squad with an injury. All the best to the boys for the next two games,” Watkins said on Twitter.

EFL clubs in favour of closing summer transfer window early

EFL clubs have indicated they are in favour of an early closure to the summer transfer window from next season.

The decision was taken following a summit of all 72 clubs on Thursday, and will be subject to further discussions before it is put to a formal vote in February.

The EFL is set to follow the Premier League after its clubs agreed to close the window the day before the start of the 2018-19 season earlier this month.

The EFL’s proposal however, would continue to allow the signing of players on loan until August 31.

The indication by the EFL teams to introduce a shorter window for player transfers follows debate about the uncertainty caused to managers and players with activity still ongoing once the season has started.

“Today was all about understanding a direction of travel in what is a hugely emotive matter, not only for clubs and managers but supporters as well,” EFL chief executive Shaun Harvey said.

“The clubs have been clear in their mandate and we will now go away and look to develop a set of proposals before moving this matter on to the next stage, which would be a formal vote in order to change our regulations.”

The 72 clubs also discussed, and opted against, using more than three substitutes during a match, but they will next year vote on a change of policy regarding the fielding of full-strength teams in the closing stages of a season.

A statement from the EFL read: “Clubs were asked to support the implementation of guidance on the following basis: ‘From the fourth Thursday in March, any team sheet for a League game should include at least 10 outfield players who featured on the team sheet for the League game before.’

“Clubs indicated they were in support of amending the policy guidance and a formal vote will now take place at the February Club Meeting.”

Carabao Cup draw goes off without a hitch, but it?s drab

The fourth-round draw for the Carabao Cup was made after last night’s fixtures with the holders Man Utd drawn away at Swansea.

Holders Manchester United will travel to Swansea. Jose Mourinho’s side beat Championship Burton 4-1 at Old Trafford on Wednesday night to secure their place in the draw.

Chelsea, 5-1 winners against Nottingham Forest, will welcome Everton – who beat Sunderland 3-0 – to Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham host London rivals West Ham at Wembley and Manchester City entertain Championship Wolves.

Arsenal will also welcome Championship opposition to the Emirates in the shape of Norwich.

Crystal Palace will be wary of an upset when they travel to Bristol City, Leicester host Leeds and Bournemouth face Middlesbrough at home.

The fourth-round draw took place on familiar turf – and at a reasonable hour – in the Sky Sports studios in west London, rather than its controversial trip to Bangkok or the bizarre decision to hold it in Beijing in the early hours of the morning.

Mercifully, Charlie Nicholas and Phil Thompson also avoided any John Salako-like confusion over who was playing at home or away as they drew out the balls.

The ties will take place during the week commencing October 23.

Full draw:

Leicester v Leeds

Bournemouth v Middlesbrough

Chelsea v Everton

Manchester City v Wolves

Swansea City v Manchester United

Arsenal v Norwich City

Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United

Bristol City v Crystal Palace
