Bolton Wanderers – teamtalk.com 1 Feb 10:51

Flanagan swaps Liverpool for Bolton in loan deal

Liverpool full-back Jon Flanagan will spend the rest of the season on loan at Championship side Bolton.

The 25-year-old has represented England and was in the provisional squad for the 2014 World Cup, having helped the Reds finish as Premier League runners-up.

Flanagan has failed to kick on and, having spent last season on loan at Burnley and made just one Liverpool appearance this term, made a deadline-day move to Bolton for the remainder of the campaign.

Earlier this month the full-back was ordered to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work and given a 12-month community order for slamming his girlfriend against a wall before kicking her.

Liverpool confirmed he would face internal disciplinary action after being sentenced for assault.

A spokesman added: “We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the player’s actions during the events that took place, resulting in this criminal conviction.

“It leaves his own reputation damaged and, through association, he has severely let down the club he had previously represented with distinction.

“We have expressed to him our disappointment and anger that he has failed to live up to the values of Liverpool Football Club, in this specific instance.”

Blackpool and England great Jimmy Armfield passes away

Former England captain Jimmy Armfield has died at the age of 82, former club Blackpool have announced.

Armfield, who played 627 matches in 17 years for his only club and was part of Sir Alf Ramsey’s victorious squad in 1966, was diagnosed with cancer for a second time last year.

“Blackpool Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of its record appearance holder and vice-president Jimmy Armfield at the age of 82,” said a statement from the club.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Jimmy’s wife Anne, his two sons, Duncan and John, and the rest of the Armfield family at this time.”

Armfield captained Blackpool for more than 10 of his 17 years at the club and was capped 43 times for England, with 15 of those occasions as skipper.

He was one of two Blackpool players along with Alan Ball named in England’s 1966 World Cup winning squad, although injury denied him an appearance at the tournament due to injury.

Only players who were on the pitch in the final received winners’ medal but what was rectified 43 years later when Armfield eventually received his medal.

Armfield, made a CBE in 2009 for services to the Lancashire community, had stints in management with Bolton and Leeds before moving into broadcasting where he spent more than 30 years working for the BBC.

He was inducted into Blackpool’s Hall of Fame in 2006 and Bloomfield Road’s newly-constructed South Stand was named in his honour in 2010 with a statue commissioned by the Blackpool Supporters’ Association erected outside the ground the following year.

In a statement to the Blackpool Gazette Armfield’s family said: “After a long and courageous battle, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and father-in-law Jimmy Armfield, has passed away peacefully surrounded by his immediate family.

“At this time we are still in shock as we begin the grieving process. We know Jimmy was a public figure, but the family respectfully ask for privacy at this time.

“We have many wonderful messages of love and support, for which we are grateful, and moved by all the kind words.

“We would also like to thank all the magnificent and dedicated NHS staff who have kept Jimmy, and the family, as well as possible over the ten years of his illness.

“During the last few days Trinity Hospice in Blackpool made a big difference to Jimmy as he slipped away, pain free at last.

“Jimmy had two great loves, first and foremost was his family, to which he was devoted and loved dearly. The other was football, especially Blackpool, England and his colleagues at the PFA.

“Once again, the family extends its thanks as we try to come to terms in a world without Jimmy.”

Championship super computer predicts outcome of final table

A so-called super-computer has predicted the final outcome of the Championship table – and it’s no surprise to see who is backed to come out on top.

With 26 out of 46 matches played, the table is beginning to take shape, with Wolves setting a blistering pace at the top.

And it’s no surprise to see Nuno Espirito Santo’s side finish the season promoted to the Premier League – with the “just-for-fun” talkSPORT computer also backing Gary Rowett’s Derby to go up alongside them.

The predictor also makes good reading for fans of Aston Villa, Leeds, Cardiff and Middlesbrough who are all backed to contest the play-off places.

However, it’s not such good for the likes of Carabao Cup semi-finalists Bristol City, nor one-time pacesetters Sheffield United.

Here’s how the table is expected to finish…

Paper Talk: 90m Lemar is Liverpool top target; 30m Fred wanted by duo

Liverpool have ear-marked a top target to replace Philippe Coutinho and Manchester United and Arsenal are chasing a Shakhtar Donetsk striker, all in the papers.

KLOPP SETS SIGHTS ON LEMAR

Thomas Lemar has risen to the top of Liverpool wanted list, according to The Liverpool Echo.

Jurgen Klopp was keen on signing Monaco’s French international Lemar on deadline day last summer but couldn’t agree a deal with the Ligue 1 side.

Arsenal also came close to landing the 22-year-old after making a rival bid which was accepted, with Lemar rejected a move to north London.

Now Liverpool are in hot pursuit of the £90million-rated exciting forward, despite Monaco head coach Leonardo Jardim saying this week they would not sell any key players in January.

The Ligue 1 outfit have allowed defender Terence Kongolo to join Huddersfield, and midfielder Soualiho Meite has left for Bordeaux, with both players leaving on loan.

But any big-money deals will have to wait, Jardim stressed on Friday, as he underlined his intention to keep the bulk of his squad together.

“We are not in the habit of doing major sales of players (in the winter transfer window),” Jardim said.

Liverpool are aware that a huge bid this month may not be enough to land Lemar and have previously shown interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt, Paris Saint-Germain winger Julian Draxler and Schalke’s Leon Goretzka.
