Cotterill targets Premier League return with Birmingham

A return to the Premier League remains the aim for Birmingham but Steve Cotterill’s immediate priority as the club’s new manager is to lift his players.

Cotterill, who was Harry Redknapp’s assistant for the final three games of last season when the pair saved Blues from relegation, has returned to succeed Redknapp in the St Andrew’s hot seat.

The 53-year-old was appointed on Friday on a two-and-a-half-year contract and watched from the stands the following day as his side were thrashed 6-1 at Hull.

That result left Birmingham third-bottom of the Sky Bet Championship table heading into a two-week international break that Cotterill wants to make the most of.

“For this club the Premier League is everything. It is a Premier League club,” said Cotterill.

“The people who work here are Premier League. We have Premier League supporters and a Premier League fanbase. And we have to make sure we do our best to get back up there.

“But that is a long-term plan. The short-term plan is to get away from a relegation zone. There has to be a short-term plan for every long-term plan.

“My priority is to get on the training ground with the players. That is where I want to be.

“I want to get to know the lads. I only had about a month with them last season. It takes a long time to get the ingredients for a person and work out what makes them tick.

“They will have a manager who will be strong, but a manager who will be strongly behind them.”

Cotterill is Birmingham’s fourth manager in less than a year, with Gary Rowett’s surprise sacking in December preceding the departures of Gianfranco Zola and Redknapp, and chief executive Dong Ren hopes this latest appointment brings a period of stability.

“He (Cotterill) has a proven record and it is time for some stability now,” he said.

“I know we have always been labelled foreign owners and we like to keep sacking managers, but the longer Steve Cotterill stays here the more likely we will get to the Premier League sooner.”

Birmingham resume their Championship campaign after the international break with a home game against league leaders Cardiff on October 13 in what will be Cotterill’s first game in charge.

Paper Talk: Chelsea want 88m star; Everton eye shock Carroll move

Everton are weighing up a shock move for a former Liverpool forward in January, while Chelsea are keeping tabs on an £88m Steaua Bucharest attacker, according to Sunday’s papers.

EVERTON TARGET SHOCK MOVE FOR FORMER REDS FORWARD

Everton boss Ronald Koeman reportedly wants former Liverpool striker Andy Carroll to make a £20m return to Merseyside in January.

The Toffees have failed to replace Romelu Lukaku after the striker’s £75million switch to Manchester United, something is said to have led to tension between Koeman, director of football Steve Walsh and club chairman Bill Kenwright.

But Koeman has now turned to Carroll as his number one target in January, according to a report in the Sun on Sunday.

The 28-year-old joined the Hammers from Liverpool four years ago, having spent 18 months at Anfield after a £35million switch from Newcastle.

The former England striker, who has had an injury-plagued career, missed the start of the season with a groin issue but made his return against Huddersfield last month and put in an impressive display as the Hammers beat Swansea on Saturday.

Carroll has 18 months remaining on his £110,000-a-week contract at the London Stadium and it is thought that West Ham will not stand his way if he favours a return north in the New Year.

Karanka turns down Birmingham; Cotterill appointment confirmed

Birmingham have appointed Steve Cotterill as their new manager, the Sky Bet Championship club have announced.

As we told you earlier today, the 53-year-old replaces Harry Redknapp in the St Andrew’s dugout, penning a two-and-a-half-year deal, and will be assisted by Lee Carsley.

Redknapp was sacked on September 16 after taking only four points from their opening eight league games.

Chief executive officer Xuandong Ren told the club’s official website: “We have every faith in Steve Cotterill to help us achieve the ambitions we all share.”

Cotterill’s appointment, which will officially begin on Monday, sees him return to the club he left in the summer, having been Redknapp’s assistant manager for three games at the end of last season.

He left that role in the summer to pursue opportunities as a manager and gets that chance back at St Andrew’s.

He will be assisted by Carsley, who was caretaker manager for two games following Redknapp’s dismissal and led the side to four points, drawing with Derby before beating Sheffield Wednesday in midweek.

The former Blues midfielder will be in charge for the Championship clash with Hull on Saturday before Cotterill takes the reigns next week.

First-team coach Paul Groves and goalkeeper coach Kevin Hitchcock will remain part of Cotterill’s backroom staff, though coach Paul Williams leaves the club.

“A lot of quality candidates applied for the manager position and we underwent a very, very careful and meticulous process of selection,” Ren added.

“We are also delighted that Lee Carsley will be Steve’s assistant manager and, with the rest of the management team, we are excited about the future prospects, we are sure they can do a great job.”

Cotterill has had a lengthy career in management and has enjoyed spells at Cheltenham, Stoke, Burnley, Notts County, Portsmouth and Bristol City.

Former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka, 44,  was also interviewed for the role, but we can reveal the Spaniard turned down the chance to get back into English football after leaving Teesside in March this year.

EXCLUSIVE: Cotterill gets Birmingham job after Karanka snub

TEAMtalk understands Steve Cotterill will be named the new boss of Birmingham City later today after Aitor Karanka turned down the opportunity.

Cotterill, 53, has held advanced talks with Birmingham officials and will be unveiled by the Championship club as Harry Redknapp’s successor later today.

The former Burnley and Bristol City boss was Redknapp’s assistant at St Andrew’s for the final three games of last season, when Birmingham avoided relegation on the final day.

Redknapp reportedly wanted Cotterill to carry on in the role this season, but he refused because he wanted to be a manager in his own right.

Former Middlesbrough boss Karanka, 44,  was also interviewed for the role, but we can reveal the Spaniard turned down the chance to get back into English football after leaving Teesside in March this year.
